Rep. James Comer, a U.S. Congressman representing Kentucky’s 1st district since 2016, has raised concerns about widespread hospice fraud in California through a series of posts on his official social media account.
On April 1, 2026, Comer posted: “Billions in hospice fraud in California is sickening to every taxpayer. 18% OF ALL HOSPICE SPENDING IN AMERICA went to just Los Angeles County alone. There are no guardrails. @CarlHigbie & I could spin up a sham LLC and start billing for fake patients. The fraud must end.”
The following day, April 2, he reported law enforcement action related to the issue: ” RIGHT NOW: The Trump Administration’s FBI is on the ground in California arresting hospice fraudsters. @GOPoversight will continue to identify and expose rampant taxpayer fraud. These criminals won’t get away with stealing taxpayer funds.”
Later that same day, Comer cited new developments from federal authorities: “The @VP Vance-led Fraud Task Force has just SUSPENDED 221 hospice providers in Los Angeles County due to taxpayer THEFT. Remember: @GOPoversight reviewed an audit confirming at least $3.5 billion in hospice fraud in Los Angeles alone. Our work isn’t done. @jsolomonReports”
Comer’s statements come amid ongoing scrutiny of Medicare spending and oversight of healthcare providers in California, particularly within Los Angeles County.
James Comer was born in Carthage, Tennessee in 1972 and currently resides in Tompkinsville. He graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 and previously served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 2001 to 2012 before being elected to Congress.
